The General and The Ambassador Podcast is a series of unique conversations between U.S. Generals and U.S. Ambassadors on their strategic and operational teamwork to defend and advance U.S. global interests. Led by Ambassador (ret) Deborah McCarthy, the interviews with senior leaders explores the responsibilities, missions and results of their joint efforts in key combat theaters and during humanitarian crises. The series is a project of The Una Chapman Cox Foundation in partnership with the American Academy of Diplomacy.
Ambassador Deborah A. McCarthy is an international security strategist with over 30 years of experience in Europe, Asia and the Americas. She is currently a senior advisor with the Transnational Security Group.
She served as the U.S. Ambassador to Lithuania from 2013 to 2016. Previously, she was the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs. Ms. McCarthy also served as Deputy Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy in Greece and the U.S. Embassy in Nicaragua. In Washington, she was the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Narcotics and Law Enforcement, the Senior Advisor for Counter-Terrorism and the Special Coordinator for Venezuela. Other diplomatic postings include Consul General Montreal, Economic Counselor U.S. Embassy Paris, Financial Economist U.S. Embassy Rome and assignments in the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
Ms. McCarthy received a B.A. in Economics from the University of Virginia and a joint Masters in Economics and Foreign Service from Georgetown University. She also has a certificate in Airline Strategic Management from IATA. She is active on social media on U.S. foreign policy (Twitter: @Amb_DMcCarthy) and is an experienced public speaker. She is a member of the Atlantic Council, the American Academy of Diplomacy, the International Women’s Forum and the Women’s Foreign Policy Group. She serves on the Board of the Academy of Diplomacy, the Advisory Board of Georgetown University’s Master’s Program in Foreign Service and on the Policy Council of the Una Chapman Cox Foundation.
